Stay Balanced: Managing Stress and Staying Fit During the Festive Season

The festive season is often a time of joy and celebration, but it can also bring its fair share of stress and overwhelm. With busy schedules filled with shopping, social gatherings, and family commitments, it’s easy to let your fitness and well-being take a backseat. However, with a little planning and mindfulness, you can navigate this bustling time while staying balanced, managing stress, and maintaining your fitness goals. Here’s how to embrace the festive season with both joy and well-being.

Understanding Holiday Stress

First, let’s acknowledge that it’s completely normal to feel stressed during the holidays. The pressure to make everything perfect—finding the right gifts, planning gatherings, or even just juggling daily responsibilities—can lead to anxiety. Recognising the sources of stress is the first step toward managing it effectively. Whether it’s financial concerns, time constraints, or family dynamics, being aware of what triggers your stress can help you develop coping strategies.

Mindful Strategies for Managing Stress

1. Prioritise Self-Care

Amid the hustle and bustle, don’t forget to prioritise self-care. Schedule time for yourself to recharge and relax. This could be as simple as taking a walk, enjoying a warm bath, or indulging in a good book. Remember, self-care isn’t selfish; it’s essential for your mental and emotional well-being.

2. Practice Mindfulness

Mindfulness techniques, such as meditation and deep breathing, can help ground you during chaotic moments. Even just a few minutes of focused breathing can reduce stress and bring clarity to your day. Consider starting your morning with a short meditation session to set a positive tone for the day.

3. Set Realistic Expectations

It’s easy to fall into the trap of perfectionism during the holidays. Instead of aiming for flawless gatherings or perfectly wrapped gifts, set realistic expectations. Remember that the essence of the season lies in connection and joy, not in perfection.

Staying Fit During the Festive Season

With holiday parties and festive feasts on the calendar, it can be challenging to maintain your fitness routine. However, it’s entirely possible to stay active while still enjoying the season’s festivities.

1. Incorporate Movement into Your Day

Find ways to weave physical activity into your daily routine. Whether it’s taking the stairs instead of the elevator, going for a brisk walk after meals, or organising a family game night filled with fun physical activities, every bit counts. Consider scheduling short workouts that fit your day, such as a quick HIIT session or a yoga flow.

2. Plan Active Family Outings

Make movement a part of your holiday traditions. Plan outdoor activities like ice skating, hiking, or even a stroll through a local holiday market. Engaging in physical activities with family not only keeps you active but also creates cherished memories.

3. Stay Hydrated and Eat Mindfully

With all the holiday treats around, it’s essential to stay mindful of your eating habits. Keep yourself hydrated by drinking plenty of water and opt for healthier snacks when possible. When indulging in festive meals, savor each bite and listen to your body’s hunger cues. Allow yourself to enjoy treats without guilt, but be mindful of portion sizes.

Finding Balance

Balancing holiday joy with stress management and fitness doesn’t have to be an overwhelming task. Start by integrating small changes into your routine, and remember that it’s okay to say no to events or commitments that don’t serve your well-being.

1. Create a Holiday Schedule

Take a moment to map out your schedule for the festive season. Block off time for self-care, workouts, and family activities. By being intentional with your time, you can reduce the chaos and feel more in control.

2. Stay Connected

Don’t forget the importance of social connections during this season. Reach out to friends and family for support, whether it’s through a quick chat, virtual meet-ups, or festive gatherings. Sharing your experiences and feelings with others can lighten your emotional load.

Conclusion

This festive season, embrace the joy of connection while managing stress and maintaining your fitness. By prioritising self-care, incorporating movement, and practising mindfulness, you can create a balanced approach that allows you to enjoy the holidays to their fullest. Remember, it’s all about finding joy in the little moments and taking care of yourself along the way. Here’s to a happy, healthy, and balanced festive season!

Office Workouts and Massage

Mini workouts throughout the day are extremely beneficial to your health, posture and wellbeing, especially as we are becoming more accustomed to office based roles. Unfortunately this environment also comes with tight spaces, curious onlookers and clothing that often causes restrictions in movement, making these workouts slightly…limiting. Other factors such as lack of motivation, distractions and simply the fact that you may forget to schedule this into your day can also stand in your way.

It is advised that we take an active break every 30 minutes as the average UK adult spend 7-10 hours a day sitting! NHS

Pre-planning your active breaks

Pre-planning will encourage you to set goals and monitor your progress. Be creative and take your interests into account, if you make these breaks something to look forward to, you are more likely to stay on track, rope in your desk buddy or create an office competition for those who want to make a difference to their day. Your could even practice self-discipline i.e. only allow yourself a biscuit with your coffee if you have taken a certain amount of steps.

Mini Tips and Tricks

Here are some little tricks that will help you incorporate additional steps into your daily routine:

  • Take your rubbish to the next bin along
  • Use a smaller glass for your water, incentivising you to get up and refill it every time it empties, try to time this to fit in with the ‘every half an hour’ guideline, then as you get used to doing this you can also focus on increasing your water intake
  • Take the stairs over the lift
  • Walk the long way around when heading to a meeting room
  • A break from your chair everytime you reach a certain goal i.e. every 10th email.

Mind and body

Exercise increases your level of productivity and focus, reduces stress and can help defog your mind of any mental blocks. It can set you up for the day with a positive mental attitude, leaving you feeling fresh and revitalised.

Can a Sports Massage Make You A Better Runner?

If you’re a runner, whether that be a beginner or a pro, and you’re thinking about getting a Sports Massage but not sure if it will be beneficial towards you, think no further! A Sports massage may just help you beat your best time.

Feel as if you have tense muscles whilst running? A Sports Massage will help get rid of that unneeded tension and improve your movement, and even improve your range of motion, resulting in a run that feels good on your body. Sports Massage does not only benefit you before a run, but helps after your sprint as well, as it helps greatly with recovery and stretching sore muscles.

A major overlooked benefit of Sports Massage for runners is pain relief. Greg Lehman, an award-winning physiotherapist and chiropractor, says the following:

“Pain changes how we function and can even inhibit healing. Massage may also help with recovery after a workout and may help get us out of a stress dominated state of our nervous system.”

This brings forward a commonly overlooked part of training: relaxation. Stress can greatly affect your running performance. According to the Health and Safety Executive, up to half a million people in the UK have work related stress, and up to 5 million people in the UK are ‘very’ or ‘extremely’ stressed through work. By receiving a Sports Massage, your body is bound to be relaxed and improved, ridding your body of unwanted stress and making for a healthy and enjoyable running experience.

When is the best time to schedule a Sports Massage?

A day or two before a big race or a scenic run with friends is a great time to get a Sports Massage. Your therapist will leave you feeling light and energetic, and ready to take on any running challenge that comes your way. If you prefer receiving a Sports Massage after your big run, that’s fine too! However, it’s important to wait a couple days, as your body has just undergone a major workout. Your Massage will be on the lighter side, as to not strain any muscles further and help speed up your recovery time.

Want to get the absolute most out of your Sports Massage? Warming up your muscles right before receiving a Massage is ideal for your body and helps your therapist begin therapeutic work quickly, making for less shock and strain to the muscles. Kim Davis, CEO of RunLab, says the following:

“Think of your muscles like gum; the warmer they are, the more pliable they are, and easier to work with and you’ll get more bang for your buck out of your Massage session.”

The best way to warm up your muscles before a session is either a short jog or walk.

Every runner has different Sports Massage needs, and it’s always important to keep in mind that maintenance is a must. Whether you’re training for the London marathon next year or simply going on a quick run around your block, Sports Massage can help with your running needs, prevent future injuries, and help make you a faster runner with no extra stress weighing you down.

Our therapists are here for your running needs, and here to meet you, anytime and anywhere, to improve your running experience.
